The egg are hand-made of wood.

From ancient times Ukrainians believe, that "Pysanka" is a symbol of eternal life and good health. 
According to legend, Mary Magdalene, the first who saw the resurrected Jesus Christ, hastened to announce this news to the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Without the gifts to the reception to his walk it was not accepted, the poor woman took her egg as a gift. 

Allegedly, after listening to the story of Mary, the Emperor said that this resurrection of the dead is impossible, it is impossible for the egg change its color from white to red - and once it has occurred. Since Easter is accepted to give colored eggs.
