Gift Cards, Gift Certificates, and Coupons are redeemed in stores and retailers to save money on purchases. Usually gift cards and certificates are given as birthday gifts, Christmas presents or for other special occasions. Typically, these are monetary equivalent electronic debit cards, or they can be on paper. These normally purchased at the shopping center or wherever the shopping and purchases will be done. You buy a $20 gift certificate for $20 and redeem it for up to $20 off your bill during shopping. Coupons on the other hand are not usually pre-paid or purchased. Instead, these are announced in the form of special coupon codes or they can be physically cut out of newspapers and grocery advertisements for a store.
If a gift card is large enough, the balance can be reduced after each purchase, meaning you do not have to use up the entire card in one sale. Many retails offer gift cards, including Wal-Mart, JCPenny, Macys, Kohls, Sears, Target, Best Buy, Amazon, Radio Shack, Home Depot and so on. Other types of stores specialize in specific products that people might in interested in, such as selling gift cards for books at Barnes and Noble, or picking up sporting goods and outdoor gear at Dicks Sporting Goods and Cabellas. Apparel and clothing stores like L.L. Bean, Lowes, Victoria's Secret and Nike have their own certificates and even fine jewelry stores like Tiffany have them.
Other kinds of gift certificates and cards can be used for gas and food. At the gas station, you can buy gift cards for gas and use them later on (a great gift idea). Some of these are even sold at a discount. Fast food retailers are also a popular source to buy gift cards for food. McDonalds, Burger King, Arbys, Chili's Bar and Grill, Applebees, Outback Steakhouse, Quiznos, Starbucks, Red Lobster, Wendys and Olive Garden are a few examples of popular restaurants that offer gift card programs.
Coupons can be purchased, but not very often unless they are special. When shopping online, stores will often times display a coupon code which can be entered in for discounted sub-totals or free shipping. Other coupon codes might offer a percentage discount or some fixed amount off of a purchase. Usually, these won't completely eliminate the cost so that you can get free stuff like you can with gift cards and certificates. Amazon is known for giving out specialized coupons to individuals who own a Kindle. People have been known to sell these codes to others on eBay for example, especially really good ones like 50% off an order. It may not make sense to sell an Amazon coupon, but for someone who is ready to buy $1000 worth of goods at Amazon, 50% off means a $500 savings. For a free coupon code, there is some big profits to be made by selling these.
At UniSquare, you are not exchanging gift cards, certificates or coupons for cash. Instead, sellers are selling these directly to other buyers, typically at a discount if they are pre-owned gift cards. These cards can be new and un-used, or partially used. (Related: You can actually open up your own store at UniSquare and configure your own coupon & promo codes and electronic gift certificates for whatever it is that you are selling.)
