A Balanced Approach

  • Hardback book by Eugene F. Krause
  • Over 750 pages
  • Copyright 1987 by D.C. Heath and Company

" The chapter and section titles in the Contents give a fair picture of the mathematics covered.
Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to problem solving that prepares the student for subsequent challenging problems that appear in virtually every exercise set in the book.
Chapter 2-8 cover the standard topics of a number systems course as well as a few that are not always treated: estimation, permutations and combinations, algorithms and flowcharts, ratio and proportion, percent and scientific notation.
Chapter 9 covers basic concepts and techniques of probability and statistics as well as such topics of current interest as simulation techniques in probability and stem-and-leaf and box-and-whisker plots in statistics.
Geometry is the subject of Chapters 10-12.
The standard material is organized around a few major concepts and is developed and amplified in an unusually large number of exercises and problems. "

" Chapter 13 is a self-contained, thorough introduction to algebra and coordinate geometry.
It should be particularly valuable to prospective upper-elementary or middle-school teachers (who lay the foundation for future work in algebra) because of its emphasis on the underlying unifying concepts and on the applications of algebra in problem solving.
Students who need a review of the most basic ideas of algebra might profit from covering Section 13.1 at an earlier point in the course, perhaps between Chapters 3 and 4.
An introduction to computer programming in both BASIC and Logo is provided in Chapter 14.
This largely self-contained chapter could be covered at almost any point in a course, depending on the instructor's views on the position of programming in the curriculum for elementary teachers.
More details about the philosophy, goals, and organization of each chapter can be found in the individual chapter introductions. "

" There is more than enough material for a full year's course.
A two-semester arrangement might cover Chapters 1 to 7 or 8 in the first term and Chapters 8 or 9 to 13 or 14 in the second term.
A three-quarter arrangement might cover Chapters 1-5, 6-9, and 10-13 or 14. "

" Technology has already reduced enormously the amount of time we need to devote to paper and pencil calculation, and it has multiplied the power we can bring to bear on problems.
In this book I have made the assumption that everyone either owns or can borrow a hand calculator.
Excercises in which calculators are discussed or for which a calculator is recommended are indicated in words or with the conventional calculator symbol. "
