- "Glamorous Susan Hayward stars in this third and most lavish version of Fannie Hurst's venerable, tear-jerker. Hayward, famous for her emotionally-charged roles, gives a bravura performance as the long-suffering "other woman" who can never marry the man she loves.
Rae Smith (Susan Hayward) is an ambitious fashion designer who meets rich and handsome department store owner, Paul Saxon (John Gavin), at the end of War II. They fall instantly in love, but Rae opts for a New York career over running off with Paul. Some years later the pair meet in Rome and resume their forbidden love affair, despite the cruel machinations of Paul's alcoholic wife, Liz (Vera Miles).
Liz, along with the couple's unsympathetic children, does her best to keep them apart. Rae, however, stays faithful to Paul until their bittersweet romance finally ends in tragedy.
