The oscilloscope is the most informative and interesting electronic
test equipment. It is basically a voltmeter, but it does more than
merely measure voltage. A waveform shows how a voltage rises and falls
in time, and thereby provides a report on circuit action. It shows the
various frequency components of color-tv waveforms, for example, with
their time relations. Some waveforms indicate phase angles and others
indicate impedance values. Nonlinear distortion, frequency distortion,
and other faults in hi-fi systems are easily identified by scope tests.
